John was involved in many bands and projects these included:
- Magazine (lead guitar, backing vocalist)
- The Armoury Show (lead guitar, backing vocalist)
- Visage (lead guitar, backing vocalist)
- P.I.L (lead guitar, backing vocalist)
- Soixie and The Banshees (lead guitar)
In most of these he had a big part in writing the songs.
